'Wild Nights' by Emily Dickinson
We were privileged to experience a performance of John Adam's choral symphony 'Harmonium' by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Choir at Birmingham Symphony Hall conducted by Simon Rattle. Emily Dickinson's 'Wild Night's' along with her 'Because I could not stop for Death' and John Donne's 'Negative Love' are used in the libretto. The huge choir sat in a semi-circle above the orchestra. As they turned the sheet music, it made a 'whooshing' sound that started on the left and moved along the choir rows and became part of the performance. |
Wild Nights – Wild Nights!
Were I with thee
Wild Nights should be
Our luxury! Futile – the Winds –
To a Heart in port –
Done with the Compass –
Done with the Chart! Rowing in Eden –
Ah, the Sea!
Might I but moor – Tonight –
In Thee! |
